Poker is like martial arts

by admin in About poker

In my mind then this is remarkably similar with regards to martial arts. In that field, many forms of martial arts are not suitable to certain people based on numerous factors and one of them being the physical limitations on the body. Also some forms of martial arts are not practical for the everyday person in the street who just wants to protect themselves in potentially dangerous situations.

So what is needed in this instance is a more basic method of self defence that will allow the person to be able to protect themselves without it getting overly complicated. We can then start to see the connection with poker here because winning a little money is something that the average person desires. Sure the odd person may have dreams of becoming the next WSOP winner or WPT champion just like some people with a keen interest in martial arts have dreams of becoming the next Bruce Lee.

Of course most people are aware of the reality of the situation and also their own limitations when it comes to practicing any field up to its highest form. In poker there are many ways to play the game that are basic that will make you some money. This is similar in many ways to the philosophy of Jeet Kune Do which was practiced by Bruce Lee and the mantra was that simplicity was everything.

Once you start to complicate systems then the use of them becomes difficult and one that requires far more skill to execute them. In self defence then if any instructor is worth his salt then they will teach accessible systems that can be absorbed by the individual. Usually it is the problem of not having enough time that is the main issue with people not being able to reach a high stage in martial arts. They need constant practice and workouts. Once again this mimics poker where depending on what you are playing, you can make your poker life more or less difficult and with it the process of making money.

There will be some forms of poker that will simply not be suitable to you. It is not possible for me to tell you which these are for the simple reason that you will know yourself better than I do or anyone else for that matter. Playing successful poker is part of the process of self discovery and if you just happen to have hit on a great way of playing poker that fits in with your own personality then that is great.

But many people end up banging their heads against a brick wall by trying time and time again to play forms of poker that are not suited to them. This could be to do with a lack of experience or simply a lack of the desired skills. But if more people looked at poker in this way and themselves then they may be shocked to find that some forms of poker simply do not suit them for whatever reason.
